And that is why you need to tell the truth to someone who can be more objective….like your doctor. To this day, my husband who loves me deeply does not want to believe I had a drinking problem. The pain on his heart was too much and he didn’t know how to help. I stopped drinking with the compassionate ear of my doctor and my doctor’s offer to help me if I couldn’t stop on my own.
Other than posting, I am not using any other features of the this WordPress blogging site. In part, this means that I don’t monitor the comments (or respond) as I should.
I too have a young relative who finally sought help for his anxiety, trauma and drinking. Several of the rest of the family, especially those of us who want to have a drink with him a few times per year for family occasions, have a hard time accepting his staunch total abstinence. Several family members are in total support in that we do not use alcohol at all, or at least never on the occasions that he is with us.
Your, and my nephew’s, realizations make the rest of us see that the world is NOT as it seems and that we are in part responsible for recognizing, and highlighting certain problems. Moreover, our responsibilities continue with helping support others, and occasionally fixing certain social and environmental situations which encourage separation, silence, shame, and fear.
Marilyn, you’re just a plain ole good person. You are a saving grace to others around you.
