Your asking is proactive and kind, but actually requires the person you are helping to stop what they are doing, to shift focus, to become more thoughtful, and to take time and energy to consider your next task. You have actually given the one you are helping a mental job to find something for you to do.
Better yet is for you to notice what needs to be done and to either go ahead and do it, or to give it as an option for what you would like to do next.
