THIS PAST WEEKEND I WAS STANDING AT MY AIRPLANE SEAT, AS OTHERS WERE, WHILE WE ALL WERE WAITING OUR TURNS TO DISEMBARK FROM OUR SOUTHWEST AIRLINE FIGHT. A MIDDLE-AGED, FEMALE PASSENGER, SEATED IN THE BACK OF THE PLANE WAS, AS POLITELY AS SHE COULD, ASKING TO EXCUSE HER, AS SHE GENTLY PUSHED PAST US. SHE WAS IN AN OBVIOUS HURRY (appeared more hurried than the rest of the passengers whom I could see and hear). ANOTHER FEMALE PASSENGER COMMENTED TO HURRIED PASSENGER TO, “WAIT YOUR TURN.” IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE IF SOMEONE OF AUTHORITY, AN AIRLINE ATTENDANT, COULD HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT SOME PASSENGERS HAVE A MORE URGENT NEED TO DISEMBARK FIRST (just as some passengers are offered to board before the rest of us), OBVIATING THE NEED FOR SUCH DIFFICULT CONFLICTS AND CONFRONTATIONS.

MOST OF US FIND OUT THE HARD WAY THAT WE CANNOT AFFORD ANY MORE ENERGY FOR THE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS OF ANGER, FEAR, ANXIETY, SHAME AND EMBARRASSMENT. UNTIL THEN, SOMEHOW, THERE SEEMS TO BE A UNIVERSAL INSTINCT THAT BY PUTTING IN TIME, MENTAL EFFORT, AND ENERGY (RELIVING, BEING ANGRY, RE-TRAUMATIZING), WE CAN ROLL BACK TIME, RECEIVE JUSTICE, BE VINDICATED, OR THE ISSUES IN QUESTION CAN BE RESOLVED IN OUR FAVOR.
