TRADITIONALLY, THE VERBAL DISTRIBUTION OF PUBLIC POLICY BY PUBLIC OFFICIALS HAD TO BE PERFORMED USING BASIC LANGUAGE, WITH DEFINITIVE WORDING, USING SOUND BITES, EVEN IF THE POLICY WAS NUANCED, AND THE SUPPORTING INFORMATION AND THOUGHT PROCESSES WERE COMPLEX, FLUID, AND NONDEFINITIVE.

With the internet of rapidly available information, along with opinion blogs, others can rapidly check an official’s word, work, current and previous statements, as well as obtain contrarian information and viewpoints.

Now, more than ever, public officials need to explain their thinking, their sourcing of information, the implications and consequences of the stated policy, and how officials plan on adjusting a policy in the face of newer and better information.

Ideally, we should be able to do both: basic scientific research to look at fundamental causes for wellness and disease, as well as produce tangible, applicable, diagnostics and treatments for diseases affecting individuals and society.

An interesting aspect of making self-sustaining/profitable and scalable businesses is that their primary focus is to be able to bring to market, products and services which are an immediate answer to current client (patient) problems (needs). Hmmm….

DO ADDICTIONS AND OTHER FORMS OF SEVERE MENTAL HEALTH DISEASES DISTORT OUR PERCEPTIONS AND DECISION-MAKINGS SO MUCH THAT THEY CONSTITUTE A FORM OF TEMPORARY MENTAL DISABILITY? MIGHT THESE MENTAL HEALTH DISEASES LEAD TO QUESTIONS OF MENTAL COMPETENCY?

People with addictive behaviors (leading to ruination of personal finances, health, relationships), severe depression (with psychosis, lack of appetite, lack of personal hygiene, or suicidality), eating disorders (with attendant health risks), bipolar mania (with associated poor judgment related to hypersexuality or hyperspending, leading to relationship strife and financial ruin), schizophrenia (with associated paranoia or loss of touch with reality) at times make decisions which are not in their own current, or future, well-being or self interests.

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH YEARS IN OUR LIVES IN ORDER TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING THAT WE NEED TO KNOW IN ORDER TO SURVIVE, LET ALONE BE SUCCESSFUL. THIS IS WHY WE LEVERAGE OUR LIMITED TIME AND KNOWLEDGE BY READING EXCELLENT BOOKS, WRITTEN BY AUTHORS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND TALENT. WE ALSO LISTEN TO AND SPEAK WITH THOSE WITH THESE SAME CHARACTERISTICS. WE EXPOSE OURSELVES, AND HOPEFULLY ABSORB, YEARS OF KNOWLEDGE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES TO A FEW HOURS. IF WE CHOOSE, WE DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE MISTAKES OR SUFFER UNNECESSARILY, WHEN WE AVAIL OURSELVES OF THE HARD-WON KNOWLEDGE OF OTHERS, WHOM WE TRUST.

One pivotal decision is knowing what to read and to whom to listen.

Another significant decision is when to read, or listen to, contrarian information or contrarian views. Maybe we should be listening to contrarian information all the time?

Reading and listening to contrarian views may change our minds, or may help us strengthen the structure and content of our own accepted understandings, and beliefs.

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A NATIONAL CONVERSATION ON ANY TOPIC (at least not one that resolves anything). ADDITIONALLY, THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS AN ELECTED OFFICIAL REPRESENTING EVEN A SLIVER OF THE TOTALITY OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS’ WANTS, NEEDS, OR BELIEFS.

Unofficially, we allow our elected officials to use a concept called, “substituted judgment”. Essentially, because an elected official cannot know (or fully represent) the thoughts and needs of every single constituent, they substitute their own judgment in the place of their constituents’ judgments.

We live in a representative democracy. One of the greatest experiments of a melting pot of humanity in the history of mankind. A sloppy, messy, chaotic democracy, but we are still here.

WE ARE A FRIGGING MIRACLE! EVERY DAY, OUR MESSY DEMOCRACY IS A MIRACLE.

It takes our thoughtfulness, kindness, toughness, grit, effort, and energy in order to keep our democracy afloat.

Suicidality…

It is so difficult, but life-saving, to make ourselves available, open and non-judgmental of people so that they are able to speak openly of their painful truths.

Erase all of our assumptions about people. Let them tell us about what none of us had suspected.

We do not need to correct, reassure or advise (unless asked), but do need to sit with the suffering. Our quite, steadfast presence, and acceptance, is the foundation of so much healing.

We speak about depression leading to suicidality. We should not discount (small or large) traumas and anxieties as powerful causes for suicidality (with our without depression).
