SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO SHOW US HOW MUCH THEY ARE PAINED, SADDENED, OR DESPAIRED. TOO OFTEN THESE PEOPLE DON’T HAVE THE WORDS TO DESCRIBE, OR CAN’T EFFECTIVELY USE THEIR WORDS TO DESCRIBE, THE MAGNITUDE AND INTENSITY OF WHAT THEY FEEL OR WHAT THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED.
Expression of such strong emotions may lead to equally strong responses and reactions, such as: graffiti creativity and art piercings tattoos mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders self harm substance abuse high risk behaviors violence Charles Tadros, M.D. August 10, 2022 Saint Louis, Missouri
Suicidality…
It is so difficult, but life-saving, to make ourselves available, open and non-judgmental of people so that they are able to speak openly of their painful truths. Erase all of our assumptions about people. Let them tell us about what none of us had suspected. We do not need to correct, reassure or advise (unlessContinue reading “Suicidality…”
FOR ALL MY HIGH SCHOOL YEARS, I WORE A SIZE 10 1/2 SHOE. THESE SHOES WOULD PINCH AND HURT FOR A FEW MONTHS, UNTIL THE SHOES STRETCHED. AT 26 YEARS OLD, SOMEHOW, I FINALLY BROKE OUT OF THE MINDSET OF HAVING TO SUFFER FOR MONTHS AFTER EACH PURCHASE. I FOUND MY TRUE, OUT OF THE BOX COMFORTABLE SHOE SIZE WAS 12 1/2. THIS IS THE SHOE SIZE I HAVE WORN FOR THE 32 YEARS SINCE MY REVELATION.
What blinders do we have on? What unnecessary pains do we complacently accept? What comfortable (and comforting) facts and paradigms do we accept in our lives, for years at a time, despite our pains, without question or attempt to find different, if not better, options and opportunities? What do we know about what we don’tContinue reading “FOR ALL MY HIGH SCHOOL YEARS, I WORE A SIZE 10 1/2 SHOE. THESE SHOES WOULD PINCH AND HURT FOR A FEW MONTHS, UNTIL THE SHOES STRETCHED. A WAY TO FEEL DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR UNWANTED CHANGE IS FOR US TO CHOOSE TO ADD (lessons, experiences, people, growth, costs, pains) TO OUR LIVES. OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE TOO SAD AND TOO PAINFUL TO CONSIDER THESE CHANGES AS LOSSES OR AS DISASTERS.

WHEN DID WE GET TO AN AGE WHERE MUSCLES AND JOINTS HURT SO MUCH THAT WE HAVE TO MAKE A PLAN IN ORDER TO BEND DOWN TO PICK UP SOMETHING OFF OF THE FLOOR?

THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF BEING ON THE RECEIVING END OF INTENTIONAL OR UNINTENTIONAL PAIN (physical, emotional, spiritual/existential, relationship, financial) IS THAT IT IS TRANSFORMATIONAL. OUR PAIN FORCES US TO THINK DIFFERENTLY, TO EMPATHIZE MORE READILY, AND TO PUSH US TOWARD EFFECTING AND ACCEPTING CHANGE.

IN LIFE, WORSE THAN A BAD OUTCOME, IS WHEN SOMEONE ELSE SEES US STRUGGLING AND DOES NOT OFFER INSIGHTS OR OPTIONS WHICH MAY HAVE LESSENED, OR EVEN HAVE AVOIDED, OUR NEEDLES STRUGGLING AND SUFFERING.

OFTEN I HAVE HAD TO REMIND PATIENTS, BEFORE A PAINFUL PROCEDURE, WHEN THEY WERE STILL PRETTY COMFORTABLE, THAT WE ARE PURPOSEFULLY CAUSING CONTROLLED PAIN NOW, IN ORDER TO AVOID EVEN BIGGER PAINS AND BIGGER PROBLEMS IN THEIR FUTURE…
routinely drawing blood for preventative testing. injecting an immunization in order to avoid becoming infected and infectious. removing a kidney stone before it becomes too big to pass on its own. removing a gall bladder, which had give the patient painful gall bladder attacks in the past, but the patient has had no further pains.Continue reading “OFTEN I HAVE HAD TO REMIND PATIENTS, BEFORE A PAINFUL PROCEDURE, WHEN THEY WERE STILL PRETTY COMFORTABLE, THAT WE ARE PURPOSEFULLY CAUSING CONTROLLED PAIN NOW, IN ORDER TO AVOID EVEN BIGGER PAINS AND BIGGER PROBLEMS IN THEIR FUTURE…”
REASONS FOR INSOMNIA, INSOMNIA-LIKE BEHAVIORS, AND DISTURBED SLEEP…
Primary insomnia (i.e. no reason) Poor sleep hygiene (i.e. no regular bedtime, watching bright screens too late, not winding down before bedtime, not sleeping in same location/ bed, falling asleep in front of a TV, then having to wake up to move to bed) Shift work sleep disorder Coming off of sedating medicines (i.e. reboundContinue reading “REASONS FOR INSOMNIA, INSOMNIA-LIKE BEHAVIORS, AND DISTURBED SLEEP…”
